In one sentence you described why I'm so adamantly opposed to Christmas: "Christmas is expensive."
Jesus' message was one of love, compassion and tolerance. I don't recall him ever saying "go ye forth and buy stuff." Legions of people are compelled by a soulless unethical marketing machine to spend money. They wrap it in people's religious sensibilities to further prey on them. It disgusts me and really, really pisses me off.
